Fixing Kitchen Mistakes
Regardless of how experienced and accomplished you might happen to be in the kitchen, everyone is susceptible to experiencing a cooking disaster from time to time. While you may be tempted to just throw everything down the disposal, it is great to know that when you make a mistake in the kitchen there are ways to fix it and salvage the meal.
One of the most common mistakes is creating a dish that is too salty. This may result from using the salt shaker too liberally to simply misreading the recipe; however, the next time your recipe turns out too salty be aware you can easily fix the problem using one of several methods. One would be to neutralize the dish by adding some cider vinegar and sugar. Add one teaspoon of each until you have reduce the level of saltiness to your liking. Another method is actually a bit old fashioned, but it does work. Simply cut up a peeled potato into large chunks and drop them into a soup that is too salty. Let it simmer for about 15 minutes before removing the potato, to allow it to absorb some of the salt.
If you find that you have a problem peeling your hard boiled eggs, instead of ruining them simply crack them and then place them in some cool water and allow them to sit for a few minutes. As the water penetrates the crack the shell will be loosened from the actual egg and they will be easier to peel.
Food that has been made too spicy can also be fixed without throwing it out or enduring a burned mouth. You can try diluting the dish by adding more of the other ingredients. While this will result in a larger recipe, you’ll be sure you have plenty of servings and won’t have to endure food that is too spicy. You can also try adding additional ingredients to counteract the heat of the spicy elements. Lime juice works well as do various dairy products including yogurt and sour cream.
To fix a burned soup or sauce, be aware that you must act quickly but you can salvage the pot before needing to throw it out. If you realize that your sauce or soup is sticking, remove it immediately from the heat and pour everything but the bottommost portion into another pot. Make sure you do not scrape anything that has stuck into the new pot to keep the scorched taste from being transferred.
